Valves rattling on a 94 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 My truck is a 5.2 ,5 speed 4x4 118000 miles..it has been using alot of oil.I suspect valve seals. It's starting to smoke all the time now.I use it alot at work and do alot of idling. If I set and Idle for 10-20 if smokes pretty bad when I take off. Now when I pull out the valves rattle pretty good like they do when you lug the engine.But there is NO valve noise at idle.No pecking no missing actually runs pretty smooth.My question is will really bad valve seals let the valves rattle like that?If not what else should I check..I'm no pro but I have drove junk my whole life so it made me an ok mechanic just not so good at the diagnosis ... |

When engines get tired you have a piling on effect from all parts being worn. The smoke is a combination of rings and worn out valve stems and/or seals. The rattling noise can be other worn out valve train parts like camshaft and lifters.
Try using heavier oil like 15w40 and put in an 8-oz bottle of tufoil to protect from lubricated parts failure from low oil pressure.
Changing the valve stem seals will not likely have any impact on the problems of old age.
