My son and I are on section 8. We are moving to another state at the end of the month. He is cashing in an annuity of 14,000 which will be used mostly

My son is 18 and this money is from when he was 2 years old and was bit by a greyhound dog. He is also on disability.

And what is your question? There's not a question in here, just a description of your situation.

Are you asking if this will remove you from section 8? You need to call your HUD; a one-time payment probably won't be enough to get you pulled off of section 8. Are you your son's caretaker? Are you reporting his disability income to the HUD? Did you tell your caseworker that you were expecting to receive a payout when your son turned 18 from this dog attack?

You are really going to need to speak to a caseworker about this to get an accurate answer. Speak with someone before you withdraw the money that way you can make adjustments to your plan if you need to.

Hi, Cbremser, and welcome to WebAnswers.

First of all, the annuity is not an asset until it is cashed out AND put into a bank account, per 24 CFR 5.603(b), and it does not become income until it actually produces some, under 24 CFR 5.609, such as putting it into a savings account or a CD.

Since your other post on another question indicates that the money will be used to pay bills and move, I would find a way to NOT deposit the funds into a recorded transaction and insure that when you cash the check it is further broken down into two cashier's checks of $7,000 each, or in any other manageable amounts, or by purchasing traveler's checks No one check should exceed $10,000, as that could trigger a Currency Transaction Report or a IRS Form 8300.

If there is a Simon Mall near you, you could purchase Simon Gift Cards, which can be used as a VISA credit card, in amounts of up to $500, for $2.95 each. But, you cannot use them as debit cards to pull cash out of them.

There may be other possibilities, such as a Green Dot prepaid Mastercards and VISA cards from Walmart, but they are more expensive, although they have higher load amounts and can be sued to get cash from an ATM.

Then, you should pay your bills and transport the balance with you in a safe form until you need it to make your move.

I hope this helps you and thank you for your question
